Virtua Cop 2 is compatible with both standard control panels and light guns. Options include difficulty selection, looseness of the weapon, selectable lifespan from one to nine, continuation from infinity to nine, audio modes and tests, controller settings and calibration of the light weapon. Shooting a hostage will result in the player losing a life. By shooting various power-ups, players can acquire new weapons, including rifles, vending machines, machine guns, magnums, shotguns, and extra lives. A boss marks the end of each phase and mainly includes airborne enemies (jet propelled) who perform missile and plasma attacks. A wide variety of villains are armed with axes, knives, pistols, grenades, machine guns, rocket launchers, and much more. Levels can be played in any order using the stage selection screen, and two selectable paths are offered after the first part of each stage. Conflicts take place through banks, car chases, hotels, apartments, ports, luxury liners, trains, subways, warehouses and more.
